topAbout
Qualifier 1 – March 3, 2012 | Qualifier 2 – April 21, 2012 | Championship – June 9, 2012
Now celebrating its 8th season, Sub League is gearing up for its biggest and best series of competitions yet. The League is offering both Gi and No-Gi competition at all three events.
This classic submission event follows Sub League’s unique rules. Matches end in a win, lose, or draw, and there are no points, just submissions. A typical event draws more than 1,500 fans and competitors under one roof, while running eight competition rings, and serving up around 1,000 matches throughout the day.
Athletes must qualify to compete for bragging rights in the June 9 Championship by placing first through fifth in one or both of the two Qualifier events.

Sub League Philosophy
The idea behind Sub League™ was to develop a competition that showcases submission wrestling at its best. To accomplish this, we moved away from point scoring and created an environment where submissions are everything.
This format doesn’t favor the takedown specialist or the control wrestler or the positional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor. Instead, it plays to the athlete that can complete submissions against an uncooperative opponent in a defined amount of time. We have worked to create a consistent venue for good, healthy, and positive competition.
Sub League™ operates in a round-robin pool format. Divisions of athletes are divided into pools of up to seven competitors. All athletes within the same pool compete against one another. This format, as opposed an elimination tournament (where competitors are eliminated at a set number of losses), typically allows for more matches for each athlete. Sub League also has a clear point system, where there are no points in a match—simply submission or draw. This system allows the virtues of competition to shine.
Benefits of the Sub League™ Format
- Athletes get many opportunities to compete (2 – 6 matches an event). More matches may occur in the case of a tie breaker.
- There is less controversy because there is minimal judging during a match—either an athlete gets a submission, gets submitted, or it’s a draw. Points don’t count within a match.
- The “league” concept encourages the submission wrestling community to train and compete over a longer period of time—promoting a higher, more consistent quality of submission wrestling all the way around.
- The format allows an event to move quickly. With Sub League™, 200 competitors can get through their pools (each athlete getting 2 – 6 matches) in under four hours time… which, compared to any tournament standard, is quick.

topCompetition Rules
Matches take place on a 20’ by 20’ mat ring. Matches start from standing. Competitors who move onto or outside the ring border when standing can (at the discretion of the referee) be restarted standing in the center of the mat. If competitors move outside the ring while engaged on the ground, the action may be frozen and moved back to the center of the mat, in position. Deliberately or repeatedly moving outside the area will be considered stalling and penalized accordingly.
Ways to Win
- Submission (physical and verbal)
- Referee stoppage (medical or rule infringement)
- Corner/coach stops fight
Allowed and Disallowed Holds and Takedowns
Submissions and takedowns depend on age and skill level. Please see the complete listing of allowed and disallowed holds and takedowns for each division below.
Illegal Techniques: All Divisions (unless explicitly stated for that division)
- No twisting leg locks (heel hooks or toe locks)
- No neck cranks
- No “Full Nelson”, no “Crucifix”
- No twister body locks / spinal cranks
- No muscle destruction submissions – calf cutters and bicep cutters
- No striking of any kind
- No deliberate slamming of an opponent
- No spiking an opponent onto their head
- No eye gouging or fish hooking
- No grabbing the ears
- No hair pulling
- No finger or toe holds
- No thumbing
- No scratching or pinching
- No kicking
- No biting
- No touching the groin area
- No knees or elbows on face
- No slippery substances allowed on body or clothing
- No use of T-Shirt in the applying of a submission
- No passivity or fleeing the mat: deliberately or repeatedly moving outside the designated mat area, stalling or refusing to engage with an opponent are considered a foul. Committing three (3) fouls in a match results in an automatic disqualification.
- Good sportsmanship is expected at all times: no spitting, swearing, or disobeying of a referee’s verbal commands.
- The referee has FULL discretion to disqualify a competitor immediately after a serious, dangerous, or deliberate foul.
Youth & Junior Division Safety Precautions
- No hitting or crushing the larynx with hand or forearm. No crushing or squeezing neck with hands or forearm from bottom (guard) or top position.
- No pulling on head to finish Triangle choke (straining the neck).
- Where Guillotines are allowed: No standing Guillotine chokes. Must not try to finish choke standing. Attacking athlete must sit back to the ground in a safe manner. No throws while holding Guillotine (must have head and arm for throws).
- For safety reasons, once a correct position for an arm lock or choke has been achieved, the referee may immediately stop the fight without waiting for the lock to be applied fully. This allows young competitors to learn the basics of submission grappling and Jiu Jitsu in a safe environment.
- Our goal is to make sure that every competitor has a positive, fun experience at our tournament. We have made more divisions and created different expectations in each division to more appropriately reflect our young athletes’ age and maturity level.
Time Limit
- No-gi matches consist of one 4-minute round with the exception of Youth (ages 5-13) novice and beginner, where matches are 3-minutes.
- Youth and Junior gi matches consist of one 4-minute round.
- Adult white and blue belt gi matches consist of one 5-minute round.
- Adult purple, brown, and black belt gi matches consist of one 6-minute round.
The number of matches in a day that an athlete will have is determined by the number of competitors in the entire division and how that breaks down into pools. It is our goal to get an athlete three to five matches in a day.
Competition Clothing
Sub League highly recommends that all competitors wear protective mouth guards.
Wrestling shoes, metal knee braces, and groin protector cups are not allowed.
No-Gi Attire: Lower body – board shorts, fight shorts, singlet, or gi pants are required. Upper body must be covered by rash guard or tight fitting shirt. Tank tops and loose fitting shirts are not allowed.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Attire: A clean solid-colored uniform (white, blue, or black for men and additionally pink for women) is required to compete in the gi divisions. Uniform jacket must have a four finger space at cuff and sleeves within 3 inches of wrist. Pants must be within 3 inches of ankles. Adult male competitors are not allowed to wear clothing under the gi jacket. Underwear must be worn under gi pants.
Blood Stoppage
Two minutes will be allowed for a cut to stop bleeding. Medical staff can stop a fight immediately if the injury is determined to be too serious.
Referees
The referee can stop or restart a match at any time if he or she considers it necessary for safety reasons. The referee’s decision is final and non-negotiable.
Scoring System
Sub League runs in a pool format: competitors will face every athlete in his/her pool. There are no points awarded within a match. Points are only awarded based on the outcome of a match: 3 points for a win (submission), 1 point for a draw (1 point goes to each competitor), and 0 for a loss. At the end of the competition, the “per match average points” are tallied for each competitor.
No-Contest (NC) Policy
An athlete must compete in more than 50 percent of his or her matches for a Per Match Average (PMA) to be calculated and count for placement in a division.
For example, if an athlete is in a pool of 5 competitors, is supposed to compete in 4 matches for the day, wins his first 2 matches, but gets injured to the point where he can’t compete in his last 2 matches, he is disqualified from placing. His day’s performance will be calculated as follows:
| Match 1: | 3 Points |
| Match 2: | 3 Points |
| Match 3: | NC |
| Match 4: | NC |
| PMA: | 6/2=3 |
However, the athlete is disqualified for not competing in over 50 percent of his matches.
Same situation, but the athlete wins his first 3 matches, then is injured to the point where he can’t compete in his last match, his day’s performance will be calculated as follows:
| Match 1: | 3 Points |
| Match 2: | 3 Points |
| Match 3: | 3 Points |
| Match 4: | NC |
| PMA: | 9/3=3 |
If an athlete chooses not to compete, that is not a No-Contest (NC). That is a forfeit and is recorded as a zero (0). A No-Contest (NC) is only recorded when an athlete is physically unable to continue competition.
Coaches Credentials
Only coaches that register with the tournament by the time registration closes and sign the Coach Agreement will receive coaching credentials to the competition floor.
Visit the Coaches page for more details.
topTeam Competition – Team Points
Athletes will earn team points for their academy/team under the following system:
1 point for each submission earned (excluding submissions earned in tie-breaker rounds)
2 points per athlete earning a 2nd place finish in his or her division
3 points per athlete earning a 1st place win in his or her division
Team Champions are decided based on their athletes’ cumulative performance over the whole season.
Competitors are responsible for registering under the correct team name. Similar but different team names will be considered two different teams. Competitors listing more than one team name will receive points for the first team name listed only. For instructions on updating your team name, see the Questions and Answers section below.
topQuestions & Answers
- How can I make corrections to my registration information (i.e. weight class, belt level, team name, etc.)?
Registered competitors can update their information online up until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, by following these instructions:
-
- Log into your Eventbrite Attendee account by going to http://www.eventbrite.com/login and entering your email address and password and clicking Log in. (If you haven’t yet set a password in Eventbrite, click Forgot Password? above the Email box. On the next screen, input your email address and click Reset password. An email with a link to reset your password, along with instructions, will be sent to the email address that you entered.)

- Click the Manage Order tab under the Sub League Qualifier 1 listing.
- Make the necessary updates to your information, then click the Update button.
When are weigh-ins?
Weigh-ins will take place in the bullpen just prior to competing. Competitors should allow time to check in and warm up before their scheduled bullpen time. We recommend arriving at least one hour before bullpen time. See schedule below.
Do I have to wear my gi when weighing-in?
Yes. Gi division weights take into account your gi. The gi (in its entirety) needs to be worn during weigh-ins.
Do I have to weigh-in twice if I’m doing Gi and No-gi?
Yes. Again, please check the schedule to know what time you need to report to the bullpen.
If I don’t make weight, can I just go up to the next division?
No. Competitors will have only one opportunity to make weight. If you do not make weight, you will be disqualified. Disqualification is non-refundable. It is the athlete’s responsibility to make the weight that they reported on their registration. If in doubt, shoot high and play it safe.
What if there are no other competitors in my division?
We reserve the right to subdivide or combine divisions, weight classes, or age classes to provide matches to participants. If you are the only competitor in your division when pools are formed, we will attempt to combine you with the closest division based on size and skill. Men’s Masters (30+) divisions with only one competitor will be combined with either Adult division or closest Masters division (based on size and skill).
Do I need to accompany my child to the tournament?
All competitors under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or authorized coach. Furthermore, all participants under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian complete and sign the release form, which will be emailed to all participants prior to the event.
