topAbout

Saturday, September 29, 2012 – Hillsboro, Oregon

These two events, held on one day, continue the tradition of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Gi) and Sport Submission Grappling (No-Gi) in the Northwest. Oregon Open is a traditional Jiu Jitsu tournament where matches are decided by highest score at end of regulation time period or overtime, submission, or referee stoppage. Both the Gi and No-Gi events follow a single elimination format with consolation matches. Every effort is made to provide at least two matches for all competitors—they may have more matches depending on their success and size of bracket.

The Oregon Open is a unique opportunity for the arts of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Grappling to showcase, grow, and obtain new students into the art of Grappling. We would like to thank sponsorsfor their generous support and encourage all competitors and fans to do the same. These organizations play a huge part in promoting the sports of submission grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and help make our events possible. Please visit them at our events and say thank you!

When are weigh-ins?
Weigh-ins will take place in the bullpen just prior to competing. Competitors should allow time to check in and warm up before their scheduled bullpen time. We recommend arriving at least one hour before bullpen time. See schedule below.
Do I have to wear my gi when weighing-in?
Yes. Gi division weights take into account your gi. The gi (in its entirety) needs to be worn during weigh-ins.
Do I have to weigh-in twice if I’m doing Gi and No-gi?
Yes. Again, please check the schedule to know what time you need to report to the bullpen.
If I don’t make weight, can I just go up to the next division?
No. Competitors will have only one opportunity to make weight. If you do not make weight, you will be disqualified. Disqualification is non-refundable. It is the athlete’s responsibility to make the weight that they reported on their registration. If in doubt, shoot high and play it safe.
What if there are no other competitors in my division?
We reserve the right to subdivide or combine divisions, weight classes, or age classes to provide matches to participants.
How many matches will I get?
Every effort will be made to provide competitors with at least two matches. You could have more, depending on how you perform and the size of your bracket.
Do I need to accompany my child to the tournament?
All competitors under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or authorized coach. Furthermore, all participants under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian complete and sign the release form, which will be emailed to all participants prior to the event.

topDetailed Tournament Rules

Rules and weights are largely adapted from the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation web page (www.ibjjf.com). However, rules listed on subleague.com supersede all others.

Ways to win

  • Causing your opponent to physically or verbally tap-out or quit by using a technique within the guidelines of the rules in each set division. (All competitors must be aware of dangerous techniques and know how to tap-out.)
  • Highest score at end of regulation time period or overtime.
  • Referee stoppage.

The following will result in immediate disqualification

  • Slamming opponent
  • Applying illegal technique
  • Fleeing mat to avoid submission
  • Arguing with the referee
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct against other competitors, referee, coach, or public
  1. Hygiene: At weigh-ins all competitors will be checked for communicable diseases, not limited to but including ring-worm, staph, herpes, and impetigo.
  2. Making Weight: Weigh ins take place in the bullpen just prior to competing. Competitors have only one opportunity to make weight. Over weight competitors will be DISQUALIFIED and will NOT be allowed to compete. Disqualification is non-refundable. They will NOT be moved to another weight division.
  3. Tie Breakers: There will be a one-minute overtime in the event of a draw. At the end of the one-minute overtime, if no points are scored, it will immediately turn to sudden death in which the first point scored gets the victory. The stalling rule will be enforced with ZERO tolerance in overtime. The referee will give two warnings and you will be deducted 1 point and given the loss if you do not go after the victory.
  4. No Stalling: The referee will issue a warning for the first offense of stalling (i.e. backing out of the guard without engaging, butt scooting, fleeing the ring to avoid takedown/submission attempts). The second offense will result in a 1 point deduction. A third offense will result in a 2 point deduction. A fourth offense will result in a DQ (disqualification).
  5. Leg Locks: Leg Locks are ILLEGAL in all Youth and Junior divisions with the following exceptions – straight ankle locks are legal for Juniors (ages 14-17) in the orange and green belt and advanced divisions. Straight ankle locks are legal for all adult belt levels and no-gi divisions. Straight knee bars are legal for brown-black belts and intermediate-advanced no-gi divisions. Figure 4 toe holds are legal for brown-black belts and advanced no-gi divisions. Note: Reaping (crossing your leg from outside in over your opponent’s hip or thigh while attacking a foot) is illegal in all divisions.
  6. Illegal Techniques in All Divisions: No strikes, biting, eye gouging (includes chin to eye), head butting, small joint manipulation (finger and toe locks), hair pulling, ear pulling, or neck cranks. No inserting of fingers inside pant cuffs or sleeves for grip. Additionally, competitors must not insert foot into opponent’s belt to hold, push, or lift his/her opponent.
  7. Youth and Junior Choke Safety Rules: No hitting or crushing the larynx with hand or forearm. No crushing or squeezing neck with hands or forearm from bottom (guard) or top position.
No pulling on head to finish Triangle choke (straining the neck).
Where Guillotines are allowed: No standing Guillotine chokes. Must not try to finish choke standing. Attacking athlete must sit back to the ground in a safe manner. No throws while holding Guillotine (must have head and arm for throws).
  8. Slamming: ZERO tolerance on slamming. Slamming to escape the guard and various submissions from the guard may result in competitor being immediately disqualified. Note: Takedowns are not considered slamming, unless intent to injure is determined by the referee. It is the competitor’s responsibility to deliver opponent safely to the mat.
  9. Neck Cranks and Twisters: Neck cranks and Twisters (wrestling guillotine) are not legal in any division.
  10. Takedowns and Control: All positions must be held for 3 full seconds before points will be awarded. If competitor A takes competitor B down and competitor B lands on his back or side, competitor A receives 2 points immediately. If competitor B lands other than his/her back, competitor A must control competitor B for 3 seconds to receive 2 points. Takedown and reversal points will be awarded based on control and positions (3 second rule is not in effect). If you take your opponent down and mount him/her you would receive 2 points for the take down AFTER clear control of the technique is determined and then after 3 seconds for the 4 point mount. Guard pass points are established when the opponent’s shoulders are flat on the ground and your legs are completely clear of their legs. If competitor A pulls competitor B to turtle (knees down) position from standing with a snap down or arm drag, competitor A must move around the arms of competitor B to control side of B for 3 seconds to receive 2 points. If you go from standing to your opponent’s back with BOTH his knees on the ground for 3 full seconds, you receive 2 points for reversal. If competitor A attempts a takedown or throw and competitor B is able to reverse position during take down and land atop of competitor A, competitor B will receive the 2 points.
  11. Pulling Guard: Both Gi and No-Gi competitors must make contact before pulling guard. Kneeling or butt scooting before contact will result in: First occurrence warning, second occurrence referee calls 1 point awarded to opponent, third occurrence referee calls 2 points awarded to opponent, and fourth occurrence referee calls disqualification. Pulling guard after contact in Gi will result in no points, pulling guard after contact in No-Gi will result in 2 points awarded to the opponent.
  12. Sweeps/Reversals: Reversal of position points are given when one opponent reverses from the bottom to the top position and has control and position. The reversal has to come from your guard or half guard. For example if you’re passing my guard and I IMMEDIATELY put you on your back I receive reversal points. If competitor A from bottom guard is able to duck under arm of competitor B and come to top position and control for 3 seconds, reversal points will be awarded. Note: Rolling someone over when you are mounted or in cross-side control is an escape, not a reversal.
  13. Out of Bounds: If a competitor has a valid submission attempt and the match ends up outside the ring, at the referee’s discretion the match may be stopped and restarted from standing position in the middle of the ring. The competitor with the valid submission attempt will receive 2 points. If the match moves outside the ring without a submission attempt, competitors will be restarted from same position in the middle of the ring.
  14. No-Gi Attire: Lower body – board shorts, fight shorts, singlet, or Gi pants are required. Upper body must be covered by rash guard or tight fitting shirt. Tank tops, loose fitting shirts, wrestling shoes, metal knee braces, and groin protector cups are not allowed.
  15. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Attire: A clean solid-colored uniform (white, blue, or black for men and additionally pink for woman) is required to compete in the Gi divisions. Pants and jacket must be same color. Uniform jacket must have a four finger space at cuff and sleeves within 3 inches of wrist. Pants must be within 3 inches of ankles. Adult male competitors are not allowed to wear clothing under the Gi jacket. Underwear must be worn under Gi pants. Wrestling shoes, metal knee braces, and groin protector cups are not allowed.
  16. Code of Conduct: We will be enforcing a zero tolerance rule on disrespecting, threatening with physical violence, or verbally abusing referees, staff, competitors or spectators at any time before, during, or after the event. If any spectator, coach, or competitor threatens or abuses the referee in any shape or form, they will be escorted out of the building.
  17. Small Brackets: Brackets with only two people will compete best two out of three matches. Brackets with three people will run in a round robin format. If you are the only competitor in your division, we will attempt to combine you with the closest division based on size and skill. Men’s Masters (30 and older) divisions with only one registered competitor will be combined with either Adult division or closest Masters division (based on size and skill).
  18. Competitor Safety: In an effort to prevent injury, referees may stop the match and grant submissions before the tap occurs if they deem the hold to be firmly secured. Furthermore, calling out or making noises of exertion may be seen as verbal submission by the referee.
