Press Release: The Northwest Starts the Year with Great Jiu Jitsu

On Saturday, January 21, 355 competitors representing 71 Jiu Jitsu academies kicked off the new year at the 2012 Sub League Open. Athletes traveled to Wilsonville High School in Wilsonville, Ore., from all across Oregon and Washington, as well as from Hawaii, Alaska and Idaho to participate in the gi and no-gi submission-only tournament.

The Sub League Open follows classic Sub League rules. There are no points awarded within a match; competitors win by submission. The benefits of this format were apparent. The 355 athletes each competed in an average 3-4 matches and achieved nearly 400 submissions, all within 7 hours (start to finish).

At the end of the day, all the wins and submissions were tallied to determine team placement. Three points were given for every athlete achieving a first place win; two points for second place; and one point for every submission (excluding tie-breaker rounds). Congratulations to all the competitors and teams on their sportsmanship, team spirit and performance.

1st Place: Impact Jiu Jitsu (100 total points)
2nd Place: NWMA (64 total points)

On Saturday, October 1, 2011, teams from all across the Northwest converged just outside of Portland, Oregon, for the 6th Annual Oregon Open Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu Championship. In total, 596 athletes competed in the all day event. Men and women, boys and girls, ages 5 to 68 took to the mat and gave it their all.

Spectators filled the stands. They were there to watch world class Jiu Jitsu and cheer on their competitors, but they did more than that. They helped support Oregon Open’s fight against hunger. At the end of the day the event raised $703 and 414 pounds of food for the Oregon Food Bank.

The individual display of talent and sportsmanship was impressive. The gi divisions were the most popular across the board. Women had good-sized divisions with 35 competitors in all. The youth competitors impressed us with talent comparable to their elders’. We can only imagine what their Jiu Jitsu will be like when they are all grown up. Our most senior men’s competitor, Bill Hart, inspired us once again, giving his opponents heck in the intermediate no-gi light weight division at 68-years-young. The men’s absolute divisions (blue, purple and brown), women’s absolute (blue/purple) and men’s no-gi absolute (intermediate/advanced) were awe inspiring.

This year’s team competition was more fierce than ever. Each team received points for competitors placing first, second and third (9 points, 3 points and 1 point, respectively, for each). With 229 total points, Impact Jiu Jitsu took home the first place team award. Team Ribeiro Lovato NW took second with 181 points. In a close third was SBGi with 172 points.
